You Don’t Own the Whole Funnel—But You Must Master It
By Charles Gold
As CMO or VP of Marketing, you’re a business person first and a marketer second. That means you must understand the entire revenue engine and all stages of the funnel.
The mistake we make is generating leads, then handing the funnel to sales and looking away. If you don’t know where conversion slows, where hand-offs break, and which segments, geos, or products show the healthiest funnel velocity, you can’t possibly be a partner to the CRO or VP of Sales.
Partner with Sales to set up dashboards to measure the entire funnel and allow the G2M leadership team to analyze performance from top to bottom across segments and territories. Identify bottlenecks and collaborate on solutions. Otherwise, you’re likely to hear the age-old refrain, “we just need more leads.”
Ask yourself: Where does our funnel actually stall, and what are the likely culprits? Are there specific actions we can take to remove the bottleneck (messaging, program, or process)?
**

On a separate topic, I’m a firm believer that the CMO role is the loneliest on the estaff. It’s tough to find someone who truly understands your challenges inside your company.
But you are NOT ALONE.
Each month, Gianna and I host Cyber CMO Confidential, a closed meeting for top marketing leaders to discuss challenges, share ideas, and, well, yeah, vent. Sign up here
